Take your time and relax on this fun two-day trip down the Delaware River, starting at the Bushkill Boat access, located in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, all the way down river to the Delaware Water Gap. Take in the beautiful sites of the Pocono Mountains while you float down through this scenic national recreation area.
Look for local wildlife as you paddle, like deer, bears, bald eagles, and much more. Your trip takes you past many points of interest along the river, including the Tocks Island damn controversy of the 60’s and 70’s and the Historic Shawnee Inn, a gorgeous riverside resort whose roots date back to the 1890s.
You can’t miss the ‘jumping rock,’ located on the Pennsylvania side (right-hand side) of the river, 6 miles south of your starting point. Further down river past Shawnee you can also see the remains of the Old Karamac Resort and train crossing as you float along toward the Delaware Water Gap.
This trip usually has calm and easy-going water with several class 1-1+ rapids along the way, so it is generally well suited for the experienced and beginner alike.
This trip is a perfect option for those who need to start later on the first day, and maybe only go 5 miles on the first day and spend a longer day on the river (11 mi) the next day, or maybe start earlier on the first day so you can get to a campsite early and hang out most of the day, swimming, fishing, paddling around, hiking, etc., right from your riverside campsite.
You can also arrive earlier in the day and have a longer paddle on the first day, about 11 miles, and a shorter paddle on the second day, about five or six miles, when camping at Walters campsite, Tocks or Labar Island. Keep in mind that there are few campsite opportunities past Smithfield Beach, so you would want to start early to get an open site. This is a good river trip if you can’t spend a full second day on the river or just want to have a lazy morning around the campsite and get a later start. A better option for a short 2nd day of your trip might be our 14 mile, Eshback to Smithfield Beach trip.
