This 14-mile, two-day canoe or kayak trip from the Eshback access, located in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, down river to Smithfield Beach, is great for the whole family, with plenty of fun things to do, beautiful views, wildlife viewing opportunities and more.
Launch at the Eshback access and make your way down the river, past the flat, tree and gravel Buck Bar and around a sharp bend in the river. Pass Bushkill access, Walpack Bend and Turtle Island, Depew Island, and Poxano Island, to name a few, along with the “Jumping Rock”. Look for wildlife like foxes, deer, bears, bald eagles and other birds, and additional species native to northeastern Pennsylvania.
Eshback to Smithfield Beach offers a wealth of camping opportunities. Groups getting a late start can begin looking for a campsite in as little as five miles at the Peters and Quinn campsites in the Walpack Bend, the site of the historic Decker’s Ferry. This is one of a few trips that can easily be split up with either a shorter first day/longer 2nd day, longer first day/shorter 2nd day or split the trip 50/50 each day. This trip gives you plenty of flexibility with all the campsites located on this section.
This section of the river is usually calm and easy going, with some small class 1-1+ rapids along the way, this Poconos kayaking and canoeing trip is great for people of all ages and skill levels, and especially groups with younger children who don’t want to be in a boat “all day”. This trip offers plenty of opportunities to stop, hike, fish, swim, and lounge around, giving the kids a chance to get out of the canoes and explore!
